Baptist Group Partners with Stern Cardiovascular Center

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Baptist Memorial Medical Group, an affiliate of Baptist Memorial Health Care, announced a partnership today with Stern Cardiovascular Center, one of the largest and most comprehensive cardiology group practices in the region.

BMMG is a not-for-profit medical group foundation with approximately 200 physicians in West Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas and North Mississippi.

"We are very excited and honored to partner with a prestigious group like Stern," said Jason Little, vice president of Baptist Memorial Health Care. "This represents the logical next step in the long rich history between our two organizations."

The growth of BMMG is consistent with a growing national trend of physicians partnering with health care systems.

Stern physicians will continue practicing at other area hospitals, providing a seamless transition for patients.

"We diligently undertook a regional examination of the partnership opportunities available to us. This affiliation with an extraordinary organization like Baptist allowed us to remain true to the values on which Stern was founded while meeting the challenges and opportunities of the future," said Dr. Steven Gubin, president of the newly formed Stern Cardiovascular Foundation. "We are thrilled to announce our strategic affiliation with Baptist. This combination will improve care for patients in our community and continue the tradition of excellence pioneered by our founders, Drs. Neuton and Thomas Stern more than 90 years ago."

Jim Boswell, vice president of physician services and chief executive officer for BMMG said, "Our ultimate goal is to improve quality and outcomes through better coordination of care and alignment with our physicians. This partnership will give us the opportunity to work more closely and benefit from each other's expertise."

Since April 2009, BMMG has opened primary care and internal medicine physician practices in Arlington, Lakeland, Collierville, the Forest Hill area and several locations in Mississippi, with ongoing plans to expand to other areas and specialties. Last year, BMMG also formed a partnership with NEA Clinic, the largest physician group in Northeast Arkansas.

The Stern Cardiovascular Center was founded in 1920 by the late Dr. Neuton Stern, who was one of the nation's pioneers in cardiovascular medicine. He was the first cardiologist in the Memphis area to use what was then a revolutionary EKG machine.

The Stern Cardiovascular Center has 17 physicians, 170 employees and three main locations in Tennessee and Mississippi.
