Baptist Medical Group Cardiac Electrophysiology
Cardiac electrophysiology examines and treats the heart's electrical system to correct an irregular heartbeat. Sometimes, the heart might go too fast or too slow, which can feel like it is skipping a beat or racing and adding extra beats. This condition is called arrhythmia and is often caused by a change or disruption of the electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat.
What does a cardiac electrophysiologist do?
When an irregularity is detected in your heartbeat, a cardiac electrophysiologist will conduct specialized testing to determine what is causing the arrythmia. In addition to blood work, your provider may also perform one or more of the following:
- Cardioversion
- Echocardiogram
- Electrocardiogram
- Tilt-table test
- Treadmill test
After evaluating your medical history and test results, your doctor may recommend the insertion of a device, such as a pacemaker, internal cardiac defibrillator or a cardiac ablation.
