Baptist Medical Group Genetic Counseling
There are many health conditions and diseases that can be passed down from generation to generation. Genetic counseling can help you understand the results of a genetic test, how a hereditary condition can be passed on in your family, and the chances that you may be impacted by them.
What does a genetic counselor do?
A genetic counselor can help you determine if you have a condition that may be hereditary and if you can benefit from a genetic test. The process begins with a review of your personal health history, your family health history and your current lifestyle. With that information, a genetic counselor will discuss with you your risk of having certain genetic conditions, what a genetic test may or may not tell you, and what chances you have of passing it along to your children. A genetic counselor can also help you take preventative action to manage a hereditary condition.
